Vertigo: Diagnosis and Management, from Jaypee Brother Publisher, is a new book in the field of vestibular disorders, which was edited by Dr Francesco Dispenza and Dr Alessandro De Stefano, with contributions from about 30 professors from several countries worldwide who are experts in the field of vertigo. The book has 262 pages and includes 20 chapters on different aspects of vertigo, with some chapters dedicated to inner-ear diseases. The book presents a practical approach to dizziness in patients, and contains a discussion about medical therapy and clinical and instrumental diagnosis for vertigo. The first part of the book includes information about anatomy, physiology of the vestibular system, and a general approach to dizziness in patients, with a window on the epidemiology of this disease. The section on instrumental diagnosis provides readers with tools to evaluate the vestibular system. The book covers the most important diseases affecting the vestibular system, including Meniere's disease, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), and childhood vertigo. This book also has a section on medical treatment and rehabilitation programs pertaining to vertigo.

Chapters 1 and 2 provide a concise review of the vestibular anatomy and physiology with explicit illustrations on coding of different head and body movements at the vestibular nuclei.
Chapter 3 provides a comprehensive review of the literature on the epidemiology of dizziness due to different causes, with special focus on the epidemiology of dizziness in the elderly.
Chapter 4 provides a differential diagnosis of vertigo in a concise yet valuable summary with helpful schemes to help identify the cause of vertigo on the basis of clinical presentation.
Chapter 5 provides a clinical and computerized test for vertigo evaluation in a concise but comprehensive manner, as well as substantial clinically valuable information, covering even the lesser known clinical tests.
Chapter 6, 7, and 8, entitled Meniere's disease, Imaging of endolymphatic hydrops, and Atypical Meniere's disease, respectively, constitute an integrated unit to cover different aspects of Meniere's disease. Chapter 6 is an excellent review of the pathology of Meniere's disease, chapter 7 presents innovative radiological methods to study endolymphatic hydrops, and chapter 8 covers atypical presentations of Meniere's disease.
Chapter 9 presents a short review of unilateral sudden loss of vestibular function and vestibular neuritis.
Chapter 10 presents a comprehensive overview of BPPV.
Chapter 11 gives insights into malignant paroxysmal positional vertigo.
Chapter 12 effectively covers superior canal dehiscence syndrome and perilymphatic fistula.
Chapter 13 titled Vertebrobasilar insufficiency and other forms of cervical vertigo: diagnosis and management, is valuable reading offering several practical tips. The authors believe in this clinical entity, which is an area of controversy.
Chapter 14 is a short article about drug-induced vertigo, providing information about vestibulotoxic drugs and other drugs known for causing dizziness as a side effect.
Chapter 15 covers the hot topic of migraine-associated vertigo and presents a practical algorithm for migraine and migraine-induced vertigo therapy.
Chapter 16 on balance disorders in children is a great chapter successfully covering the different causes of pediatric balance disorders.
Chapter 17 on vertigo in the elderly is a short article written by Michael Paparella with emphasis on Meniere's disease in the elderly. The chapter also includes a supplementary article about BPPV and aging by Yasuo Ogawa, Msmoru Suzuki.
Chapter 18, titled Medical management of vertigo by Dario A. Yacovino and Timothy C. Hain, is an outstanding chapter covering the pharmacological interventions of vertigo, especially Meniere's disease and migraine.
Chapter 19, entitled Surgery of vertigo by Gauri Mankekar and R. Santhosh Kumar, is a nice short updated summary of surgical interventions for vertigo, including a hint on vestibular implant prosthesis.
Chapter 20, titled Vestibular rehabilitation therapy by Richard Gans, is an outstanding chapter explaining the physiological bases of vestibular rehabilitation and diagnosis-based strategies.
Critique
The authors have achieved their goal of compiling a book containing the various features of vertigo treated by some of the most famous scientists worldwide specialized in the treatment of balance disorders, who have described in this book their experience in the diagnosis and management of dizziness in patients. This book provides a wealth of information through a single source, although space constraints did not permit the inclusion of a detailed instrumental diagnosis of vertigo and interpretation of test results, a detailed account of vestibular rehabilitation strategies, web-based videos showing the different clinical tests, and some real cases from the contributors' experience. This publication is recommended as a supplementary text for coursework in audiovestibular medicine, otology and neurotology, and audiology. Practicing physicians and clinicians will benefit substantially from this book with regard to better management of patients experiencing dizziness.
